I sell affordable artwork for the happy couple to hang in their new home. A totally custom, on of a kind piece of art created just for them!

How have other brides used/benefited from your item/service? I also offer guest book alternatives. A unique guest book that also serves as an art piece when completed!

What is the price evaluation on comparable store bought items from your own? A custom art piece would typically go for much more. As an interior designer by trade, I love that I can offer an affordable way for people to enjoy an original piece of art in their home.

Tip for Brides: related to your item/service Don't settle for posters or prints mass produced that cost the same amount, if not more, than my original art pieces. Not only do i design the art, but also the frame that showcases it! Here are a few images as well as my etsy shop!

Not Just Any Vacation...

The older I get, I'm only pushing 30 but still, the more I come to realize what the definition of "Vacation" really is. As a military family I used to think "Vacation" was any time we had a chance to hit the road for a week or two and visit with family.

Well...after quiet a few "family" visits gone wrong; I have a new found longing for just a quite, relaxing time enjoying the playful laughs of my children and flirtation banter with my hubby. None of which can be found in the midst of a long road trip and the bustle of a family get together.

With the recent closure of my shop and my frequent "disappearing" acts I'm sure some of you have thought I have found myself on some sort of extended vacation. Not the case, quite yet.

Paper Perfections has grown more successful than I originally anticipated, in which I owe God all the credit. I have now found myself in the place of having to close my shop doors of the month of March.

Since the quality of my product as well as customer service is on the top of my priority list I have had to close down in order to give all of my brides the attention to detail the deserve. I plan on opening back up on the 20th of March, featuring a "Grand Re-Opening" with new styles and professional photos in order to give a better visual effect to the Wedding Stationary I provide. I will also showcase a calendar schedule to keep each bride current on the slots available.

Hand Canceling- How To's

As the very ingenious, thoughtful, bride you are...you have
taken extreme care in choosing your wedding stationary.
As your invitation sets the whole tone
for your wedding you have spared no expense to make sure
they match just as closely as your flowers match your linens.

Whether you have worked closely with a designer, like myself, hand picked them from a local stationary shop or even taken the time to make them yourself; how do you go about to ensure they make it to your guest's hands just as beautifully?

The simple answer is, "Be sure and Hand Cancel." But as with most things in life, to get something done right the first time a bit of thought and careful planning must go into it.

First of all, for those of you who are new to hand canceling, I'll briefly explain.
Hand Canceling consists of a postal marking placed upon a stamp, envelop or post card by hand and by a postal authority. This indicates the date and location, and prevents the stamp from being reused. A canceller, which is applied by stamps, by hand. A cancellation applied with a hand-held device, as opposed to a cancellation applied by machine.
A common misconception at this point is they will "never" run through a machine. While hand canceling prevents your precious package from running through the traditional 2-3 machine route, there is a high possibility they will have to pass through a few sorters.

With that said, finding a post office willing to take on this task takes as much "shopping" around as it does to find those perfect shoes.

If you live in the city, I highly suggest driving to a post office on the outskirts of town. As hand canceling is supposed to be a federal service provided by all post offices, many have the choice to deny that service based upon the amount of employees available.
So when you hear "No", most likely they can, they just don't have the time or don't want to take the time. If they don't have the time you don't want to have them do it anyways because the greatest of care will not be taken with you stationary.

In all the research I have done on this subject it seems about 50% of brides have been happy with hand canceling and 50% have not. This is why I think it's very important to start off with a post office filled with workers you trust and are pleased to take the time to ensure your Invitations are handled with care.

The HoneyBee Wedding Blog actually had a very precise article on hand canceling to include photos with the difference between hand canceling and not.

Now Available: an Aussie Wedding

Looking to put a fresh spin on things that none of your friends have tried?

Consider some of the creative touches regarded as traditional of an Australian wedding.

Claire and Daniel are a vibrant Australian couple planning a very special blend of what’s old and new as they prepare to tie the knot.

Seating:

I think this seems to be a big one; it seems like there alot of couples who just have the names near the entrance and people can sit anywhere. Normally in an Australian wedding, half the stress is sorting out the all important 'seating plan!' Guests don't choose where they sit you basically allocate them to a table and a spot. When guests attend the reception the plan is displayed so you know where you'll be sitting and when you get to the table your name tag is set for the spot that you'll be sitting. I don't know which system is better really; I know just letting people chose would be easier but I guess this avoids the whole 'oh Auntie Joan must be kept away from cousin Bertha type issue' although it does involve more planning!

I asked Claire if there was any ever issues with guest following the seating chart?

“Yep guests always follow the seating chart. So when you get to a reception you have the seating chart usually outside where you may have pre dinner drinks or something telling everyone which table they are on. They get to that table when they go in and each seat is marked out with a place card with their names so each seat has been specifically allocated. Yes, time consuming! But, yes, also avoids any awkard situations so you don't end up with people that don't like each other near one other.”

Favors:

We tend to call favors “Bomboniere”. It is actually an Italian word for favours given to wedding guest. As traditionally it was an Italian tradition to give the almond as “bomboniere” for wedding favors.

The “Wishing Well:

In Australia most people these days have a wishing well. With the invite they include a little card telling people that “as they have most things they request money instead.” usually this is in form of a poem of some sort. I guess its a bit of a strange one and I know one that we struggled with; asking for gifts by including a note where your registry is set up seems a bit wrong but asking for money even worse! It was one that we really went a bit back and forth about. However, it's very practical and now days everyone here does them. We have four weddings in the next few months and they all have a wishing well card. We thought; maybe if its acceptable now, we'd do it too.
We did try and word our card accordingly however, to let people know we weren't expecting a gift and it was entirely up to them if they wished to: A - get us anything and then B- if they wanted to get is money instead. A bit of a sticky one however and I guess if its something that you aren't used to it can appear quite rude but like I said here its the done thing.
Normally couples use a well (hence the term) but now days people have all sorts of things from a display of pretend boxes all wrapped up with a slot in them, to luggage (to symbolise the honeymoon) I've heard of people having a little post box! Now a few people, me included, are having a old wrough iron bird cage that you drop the envelope in. Normally these will sit on a table inside the reception

At the reception: it’s the speeches, games and dances

This is where each couple puts their own special twist on the overall entertainment. I've heard of Guitar hero to karoke where the best table wins something; To quizes about the couples. oh actually one that I heard of that I liked involves the garter being put on a football (good for football fans out there) The groom turns his back and all the guys get up and try and catch it. The one who catches the ball gets to keep the football and the garter.
Tieing up the Wedding; “What to do with the bouquet?” Sometimes the bride gives her bouquet to someone that she thinks has helped her or that she wants to thank rather than throwing it

Save the Date "Savvy" with Leslie & Jordan

Why did you decide to send out
Save the Dates?

I decided to send out save the dates because a lot of my family is in Colorado (the wedding is in CA). I do have a wedding website, which I think is a great way to spread the word, but I was concerned that less tech-savvy guests might miss out. Also, I think they are very classy and get people excited about the wedding well in advance.

When will be you sending out your
Save the Dates? What made you choose that date?

I am going to send out my Save the Dates in December, about 7 months before the wedding. I chose that date because I wanted out of town guests to take advantage of cheaper airfare, and because there are so many weddings during the summer, I wanted to get mine on everyone’s calendar as soon as possible!

Will your Save the Dates have to match your invitations? Why?

My Save the Dates will match my invitation, because I think the event comes off as more successful and organized if it has a central theme. I think whether they do it consciously or subconsciously, guests will recognize and appreciate that everything is coordinated in terms of color and style.

What info did you choose to put on your Save the Dates and why?

I put our names, the date, the location, and our wedding website on our Save the Date. I’ve read that it’s improper etiquette to put your registries on your invitation or save the date, but you CAN list your wedding website, which will link guests to your registry. Maybe it is sneaky, but it’s one way to direct guests to those oh-so-important registry gifts!

Will you be

If so will you use your monogram on other stationary?
I will be including a monogram, and I’d love to put it on stationary! Great idea.

Will you put “and guest” on the envelope of your save the dates?

Yes; I would like to let guests know as soon as possible that they will be allowed to bring a date, so there isn’t confusion.

What are some tips to "wedding" out your guest list?

My fiancé and I both created out lists, and then we paired it down together. There was definitely some negotiating that went on. I don’t think it’s ever easy, but there are just some people that you have to cut.

It is important to remember that it’s your wedding – choose who you want to spend time with on one of the most special days of your life. Don’t make your wedding into a time to “catch up” with people. You should be able to enjoy the day with people you know and care about.

Was there anything particularly stressful about this process?

I love planning, and since this is my big event, obviously I have a lot personally invested in the process! I don’t think it should be stressful. Wedding planning should always be fun. I just try to stay organized. Planning tips on wedding websites such as theknot.com are great resources. Also, keeping a budget and sticking to it helps you stay on track.

Do you have any tips to share concerning save the dates/wedding stationary?

I would say use wedding websites to look up proper wording for invitations; that really helped. Also, I am getting two sample options made so my family can help choose which one should go out to guests. It is a small gesture, but helps everyone feel involved. Buying samples is a must!

Just when you think pulling off this lavishly unique wedding style may be hard to do…just wait until you hear the very practical advice Kristen has to offer to all you fabulous brides looking for a bit of hope behind your wedding preperations.

We have overestimated just to be safe.
We were also sure that our catering choices where hefty potions per person (we are doing action stations monitored by chefs – so we have passed appetizers and a burger station, a mashed potato bar, pasta bar etc).
My future hubby is 6’5 and his family of men like their food! I hate being hungry at a wedding – we wanted to avoid that!

What’s your bridal style and what are some unique ways you plan on adding your unique touches throughout your wedding?

My bridal style is old Hollywood, romantic and elegant. We are having our guests wear black, yet there won’t be a cinch of black at the wedding.

We are having whites, creams, ivories and blush pinks with large champagne urns with ostrich feathers and large vases on our tables with hydrangeas, Valencia roses and champagne curly willow. I’m also big on linens! White Chair covers with white sashes and floor length table cloths are a must! We also have special lighting and our reception is in an old big courthouse (the landmark center in st Paul) so it fits the warm romantic feel we are going for. We are incorporating the old Hollywood, gone with the wind feeling, by having a specialty cocktail hour with dean martin, frank Sinatra playing.

Our January wedding is at 6pm so the reception won’t be until 715, and in Minnesota it is dark by then! So we want to make sure our large big space had warm lighting and a billion candles!

Do you prefer custom made or pre-fabricated wedding stationary?

I’m not sure, I’m having a really hard time with my invitations, I get ready to order them online, and back out because I’m not sure of quality, final product look etc. I’m worried the layout won’t look right, or the paper will feel cheap or something may be misprinted with them! I want my invitations to set the mood for our formal wedding without breaking the bank.
I’m very visual! I absolutely recommend buying samples and asking sisters/friends etc (my sweet future hubby says he likes everything, so that doesn’t help me much!) I ordered tons of samples – I even paid for some! I’m sure glad I did because they narrowed quite a few vendors out. Ladies you will want to TOUCH your invite – trust me! I never thought I would care so much about what they would look like but it’s a true investment like you said before and invites really set the tone for your wedding, you want to set the stage beautifully!

Be Budget Wise: Have fun and stick within your budget – don’t go one dollar over, it won’t feel good! Seek tips from experts, and really look into hiring a planner – you will be so happy you did!

Tips to an Enjoyable Day:

Hire a wedding consultant.

If it’s not in the budget for the entire wedding, make sure you have one for the day of. Your wedding isn’t a day where you want your mother worrying about the details. Make it special for everyone in your family – don’t forget someone has to clean up and manage your big day – why would you want your mother or sister to have to worry about that.

I wanted to make sure my whole family felt like it was a destination wedding (no worries, or lugging things around – just enjoying the special day). I have gotten a lot of compliments and gratitude from my close family members. Now, they can be with me at the spa, relaxing and getting ready instead of arranging my flowers. For me, we had one from the beginning and she has MORE than paid for herself with all the amazing deals she can find us. We had a less-than-average budget for our wedding, yet she has planned it so it will be like a gala event.

"THank YOu" Notes--How To's

A personal thank you note is the only appropriate way to say "Thank You!"

At one time, notes were not considered necessary when you thanked someone in person. Today, with guest lists being longer and guests busier, a personal thank you note is the only way to make sure sincere appreciation is expressed. Just telling someone who has given you a gift, how much you appreciate it, does not "cut the cake!"

Tip While Writing:the most heartfelt thank-you notes take a bit of composng. As you write, keep a notepad nearby to try out sentences, phrases and your penmanship.

Thank You Do's and Don'ts:

Never, Never, Never, send a preprinted thank you card.

When you send a preprinted card, you are telling the person receiving the thank you that their gift didn't mean enough to you to even receive a mention in your note. A warm personalized, handwritten note, regardless how brief, tells the guest how much you appreciated the gift and how it will be cherished for years to come. Handwritten notes express sincerity.
Be sure to send thank you notes to friends and relatives who arrange showers and parties for you. It is appropriate to thank them for the party or shower in the same card you send thanking them for their gift.

When you receive more than one gift from someone, each gift must be recognized with its own thank you card. If you receive a shower gift from a friend or relative and then, three weeks later, receive a wedding gift from the same person, it is not appropriate to thank them in one card. Shower gifts should be acknowledged within ten days of the party and wedding gifts within two weeks after returning from the honeymoon. Wedding gifts arriving in advance of the wedding, should be responded to immediately, so that an extended period of time does not pass between receiving the gift and it's thank you.
Be sure to put your new return address on all thank you cards. Your guests will appreciate having your current and correct address.
Although colored ink is readily available in your favorite stationery store today, it is still more appropriate to write your notes in dark blue or black. It is more easily readable.
When writing thank you notes, never start the note with "I." Always use "you" more than "I" or "me" in the note.

1.When writing to a close friend or relative:

Dearest Aunt Mary:
It's beautiful and we love it!!!!! How thoughtful of you to give Keith and me such a lovely family treasure. Grandmas' hand-crocheted bedspread will be my most prized possession. We both thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

2.When writing to a person you don't know very well:

Dear Mrs. Monnie,

3.When writing to a group of friends who have gone together on a gift:

If less than ten people have gone together on the above gift, then a personal note to each must be written. If more than ten have participated and signed the enclosure card, such as in the case of coworkers in the same office, one note, placed on a bulletin board is considered proper etiquette. Be sure to speak to each person individually as the opportunity arises and express your gratitude.

4.When writing a thank you note for a gift not really cared for:

Dear Mike and Mary,
Thank you so much for the gum ball machine. We'll be sure you're among our first guests to visit, so don't forget your pennies! Looking forward to seeing you soon.

5.When writing a thank you note for monetary gifts

Appreciation for monetary gifts are expressed in the same way you would thank a friend or loved one for a purchased item. If you have a particular item you intend to buy with the money, you can share that with them. Example:

Dearest Aunt MaryKevin and I want to thank you so much for the check you sent for our wedding. We have been saving for a down payment on our first home andhave added your gift to our special account. It was so thoughtful of you. Someday soon, we will be inviting you to our housewarming!!! Can't wait to see you and Uncle Ted again.Love, Sarah

From the minute Ashley and I started planning our wedding, we knew that we wanted a personal touch to come through in many of our wedding elements. The problem... neither of us is crafty. Not even a little bit. Enter stage right..... amazing Etsy seller, Sarah. I immediately fell in love with her shop on Etsy and knew our invitations had to come from her. After a few emails back and forth regarding our theme and colors, I received a gorgeous sample invitation and just knew This. Was. It.

Sarah worked diligently to get our invitations turned around in a very short time frame. I dropped the ball on deadlines, but she didn't miss a beat. Invitations have been framed, scrapbooked and much more in order to hold onto a special momento of a very special lasting memory, how does yours hold up to the test of time?

All of my invitations are made out of 70-90 lb. cardstock. A high quality made to last and last. If you aren't farmilur with paper pounds you could compare it this way. A normal piece of printer paper is about 24lb and the paper I use is over 40lb per square inch. Thick enough to be of a classy quailty without flopping over while being held.

Because I am aware that most often your invitation will be used as a special keepsake I put special care and durability into each paper creation.

Brides who choose their bridesmaids without forethought often end up with attendants who are not up to the task, or who are initially excited, but lose interest in participating as the wedding day approaches. Even worse, brides can lose friends in the stressful situations that can arise as the wedding is planned. All the drama is easily avoided if you select your wedding party carefully. Here are five tips to help you avoid inviting conflict down the aisle:

1. Take your time.Immediately after he proposes may seem like the perfect moment to ask your friends to stand up for you, but it is wiser to share the news of the engagement without raising the subject of the wedding party. Your emotions will be running high, so you may wish to wait for things to settle down before making any decisions. Should someone ask who your maids will be, say that in all the engagement excitement, you haven't had a minute to think. Keep in mind, while you can always ask someone to be in your wedding, it is not an invitation you can take back.

2. Think about your friends' life situations.Is one of your candidates already committed to two other weddings this year? She may be relieved just being one of your guests. Is another friend working three jobs to pay off her credit cards? Maybe now isn't the time to ask her to buy a pricey dress and a plane ticket. The same consideration should apply to friends, siblings, or family members with demanding schedules, and/or small children. These friends can still be included in the planning, and can be lifesavers with tasks like monitoring the guest book, or handing out programs.

3. Contemplate your maids as a group.Will everyone get along? It's wise to think about how they will work together. If two of your close friends aren't speaking to each other, don't make yourself crazy by allowing your wedding to be their opportunity to confront each other. Instead, ask one to be a bridesmaid, and invite the other to do a reading, or participate in another way. The same goes for feuding relatives, or for ex co-workers who parted under bad circumstances.

4. Remember, although being a bridesmaid is an honor, it is also a job with responsibilities.If you will need a lot of help, make sure to select one or two bridesmaids you can really count on to hold everything together. Although you love her, the friend who skipped off to Bali the night before her IRS audit may not be a wise choice.

5. Lastly, don't let anyone pressure you to include someone you wouldn't have picked on your own.Attendant spots are not guaranteed to women whose weddings you were in, nor to cousins your mother-in-law would like to see included. Your bridesmaids are your pillars of strength during the wedding planning process, and you want to be enthusiastic about each of the wonderful friends who accompany you down the aisle. Resentment and guilt have no place at the altar on your wedding day.

Invitation Trends- Pocket Fold

It’s easy to see why the Pocket-Fold style of invitation is a top choice among today’s brides.

With all the “extras” that go along with pulling off an organized celebration, all the necessary add ons can now be stored in a useful yet creative manner, without sacrificing style.

There are quite a few possible combinations you can choose as appropriate inserts of your pocket invitations, depending on your needs.

Response Card (RSVP)

Along with the actual invitation you should include a response card (RSVP) along with a stamped response card envelope.

This is how your guests will let you know whether or not they’re coming and if they are coming exactly who is coming with them.

There is often confusion when it comes to filling out the response card. The guest should start by writing all the names of the guests that will be attending on the line that starts with “M.” For example that line would read “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith or Ms. Jane Smith for a single person, if children are included it would read Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, Suzy Smith, James Smith.”

Reception Card

If your reception is being held at a location separate from your ceremony you should include a reception card. The reception card should include the name and location of the reception venue and often will include driving directions from the ceremony location to the reception location.

Accommodations Insert

Some couples include an accommodations insert with their invitation. The accommodations insert will usually include hotel accommodations recommended by the bride and groom and often include information on a special rate they have secured for their guests.

Map/Directions

A map or directions insert is also common. Often the bride and groom will provide directions to the ceremony and reception location and any special parking arrangements they may have made.

Additional Event

Many couples now choose to have a “wedding weekend.”
Often times guests are coming from far away and the couple plans additional events so that they can spend time with their guests and so that guests can get to know other guests.

Picnics, barbecues, cocktail parties, and golf tournaments are just an example of additional events the couple may have planned.

Sometimes they will include this information in with the wedding invitation but I usually recommend against that.

There is a fine line between the right amount of information and too much information all at once. If you aren’t already including several additional inserts with your invitation than a small insert with additional events information would probably be o.k. But if you’ve already got several other inserts included with your invitation I recommend sending the details of additional events separately.

You may even want to wait until guests have responded that they will be attending and then send them the additional events information. Too much information at one time can be confusing for guests.

Recipe Card

This is a fun, untraditional, addition to the pocket fold inserts. You can have recipe cards made up to match in which family and friends, young and old, can share their favorite recipes and kitchen tips. This is a very thoughtful addition that will help you stay connected with your guests.

With the pocket fold style of invitation comes the abilty to encapsulate the theme, style or feel of your wedding celebration. Such as in this "Destination" style invitation. There will be no quetions about where this wedding will be held or even what they can expect as far as attire and decor.

The band that holds the pocket together, called the belly band, is where all the pop and creativity will begin before your guests open up to the style you have chosen.

As every savvy business owner does, I often search out the web to take a peek at what my completion is offering. It’s staggering when I find site after site presenting wedding invitations for an overwhelming price and that is before all the “add ons”. Wedding Invitation Questions

The beauty of a wedding celebration is each gathering of merriment has a unique personality as special and sometimes just as complex fashioned by all in attendance.

Below are common questions asked and answers that many brides before you have looked to solve. If you have any simple or even unique questions you would like to pose feel free to email me and I will be sure to get an answer for you.

1. When coworkers assume they'll be invited to the wedding.

It is very rude to expect to be invited to a wedding, let alone hint to the bride about your expectation. Shame on your co-worker. Typically co-workers are not invited unless they are close friends. Simply tell those in your office that you'd just love to invite everyone you know but you have such a large family and a limited budget that you simply cannot invite coworkers. But, I would only do this if asked directly.

2. Proper etiquette for inviting coworkers to wedding

Company policy states, if I wish to have coworkers at my wedding I have to invite the entire staff which is about a dozen more coworkers than I planned on inviting. To save on invitations, is it rude to send just one invitation to the store? And, since, again by company policy they all have to be seated together, is it rude to request that they don't bring guests?

That is strange and unfair company policy. It may be best not to invite coworkers. But, if you do, you are expected to treat them like all other guests. They receive their own invitation and all significant others are invited as well.

3. Timing your Invitations Right. What is the best time to send out invitations.

Sending invitations out too early or too late can be a major wedding faux pas. We send invitations about two months before the wedding. Plans can and do change and it isn't polite to burden our guests with those changes. If you are worried guests will need an abundant heads up you can always opt to send out save the dates.

4. Information Wedding & Reception - Appropriate to Address in Invitation?

This is done in the formality of the invitation, including the language. It is also indicated by the venue/location and time of day. So, if you stated that your wedding is in a park in the afternoon, your guests would most likely know that it will be casual. Of course you could also verbally inform them

5. Couple paying for wedding. Who receives RSVP's?

Traditionally, responses would have gone to your mother, as her and your father would have been host. But, this is not the case anymore, especially in your case. The responses should go to the person keeping track of them, which would be you.

6. Civil wedding already took place now having church wedding.

That would be a blessing of the marriage. However, this is not a wedding and should not appear to be one. Invitations are sent to those close to the couple and can be handwritten informally or printed out on a postcard style card.

7. Who makes the wedding guest list?

Traditionally the bride and groom's family can split the guest list 50/50. You have the option of fine tuning the list if it gets out of hand. Remember your budget, venue and church accommodations and the intimacy you desire when providing the number of guests.

8. Combining wedding announcement and invitation.

You can't combine an announcement and invitation since an announcement is sent after the wedding to announce that you have been married and an invitation is sent before the wedding to invite your guest to attend. So, send invitations to anyone you want to invite and let them decide if they want to attend a destination wedding. Then send announcements to any one not invited to the wedding that may need to be informed that you've been married.

9. Addressing an invitation to a legally separated, but not divorced guest?
In the old fashion etiquette world, you would use the title "Mrs." either way. But, today we can use which ever title she chooses. Most likely, she would prefer "Ms.” But, you could ask her.

10. Proper Invitation Wording for Divorced Bride.

You should use your legal name, the one that everyone knows. Anyone who is close enough to you to invite to your wedding should recognize your name. Your fiancé might not like seeing your ex-husband’s name on his wedding invitation but, if it is your name, then that is the name you'll use.

11. Should church coordinator be invited to rehearsal dinner and reception?

You certainly can but are not required to invite the church coordinator.

12. Do groom's parents get a wedding invitation?

Yes, all guests will be sent an invitation including parents and bridal party.
How much time should guests be given to respond to wedding invitations
Normally you need to turn in your guest count to the caterer 3 to 4 weeks in advance of the wedding.

13. Husband/Wife military rank on invitations.

You could list the branch only if you are on active duty. If you are on active duty, it would be listed under your name

14. Including directions in a wedding invitation

Pocket invitations are a popular pick which includes a insert for printed directions and/or Pre-printed maps are fine to enclose.

15. When are thank you notes considered late?

You generally have 2 weeks to one month (some stretch it to 2 months) to get a thank you note in the mail before it's considered rude. And a good rule of thumb is you can't use or display the gift until the thank you note is sent!

First Up-Save the Dates

Save the Date Cards are announcements that inform your guests of your future wedding in order to keep your special day free.

They are essential in the following situations:

1. If many of your guests are traveling to your wedding

2. your wedding takes place on or around a holiday

3. you are planning a faraway destination wedding

4. Your wedding will take place in a seasonally busy or tourist locale, where the flights and hotels perhaps book up early.

They are generally sent at least 4-6 months prior to your wedding but, if you are planning a destination wedding, for example Hawaii it is strongly recommended that you send them 12 months in advance if not longer.

For seasonally busy and tourist locales or on or around a holiday it is best to send them 9-12 months in advance. Your guests will then have ample time to make all the necessary arrangements needed to be a part of your special celebration and may even extend it into a vacation of their own.
Use your imagination, Save the Date Cards are not meant to be formal. There are many design options available. You can have them match your wedding invitations, magnets, brochure style, post card size, multiple layers, booklet style; you can add a picture of you and your fiancé, or embellishments to add a personal touch.

Here are some guidelines on what your cards should state, your names, date of wedding, city or town and state of where wedding will take place.

Also, because Save the date Cards are a recent trend and many that have not attended a wedding recently may mistaken them for the actual invitation be sure to include something along the lines of, “Invitation to follow”, “Invitation and details to follow”, “Invitation will follow” this is usually placed at the bottom of the card.

If you need to keep your guest list to a minimum, make a list of close family and friends whom you want to make sure will be able to attend and mail them a Save the Date Card, you do not need to send Save the Date Cards to everyone you are inviting but, every guest that receives a Save the Date Card must also receive an invitation.

You could also use this time to recommend to your guests additional information to help facilitate their planning such as airline, car rental, hotel, information on things to see and do in the area and surrounding areas, special events, theatrical shows etc.

Go the extra mile and acquire group discounts by calling specific companies and seeing if they offer group discounts.

Often times a wedding consists of shifting guests from one place to another in order to culminate this day of celebration. A tip If I May:

Thread ribbon through the hooks I provide on the backs of the sign for easy hanging. Coordinate the ribbon with the bridal party's colors. Signs can be hung on hooks, trees or sit elegantly on either a short or tall easel. For a staked sign add a big bow just under the sign where the stake and sign meet. It looks gorgeous!

Guestbooks are one of those things at a wedding that, amongst the excitement, can blend in to the background. Often, people don’t invest much time or thought in what the guestbook will look like or how it will be presented. However, the guestbook is one of the lasting memories that you will have from your big day.
Let's face it, getting your guests to sign a wedding guest book can be difficult. Waiting in line, trying to decide what to say . . . it's an outdated tradition!
However, Savvy brides are finding new ways to spice up the old custom by making it fun and creative for guests.

Below you will find some elegant ideas with a modern twist to help you hold onto those sentiments you wish to never forget.

If you are looking to get your guests out of having to stand in line and enjoying their time, you could have cards already at their seats to be dropped in a central location such as the gift or viewing table or any other spot of your choice in which you anticipate high traffic.

1. Consider Containers: an antique birdcage, fishbowls, decorative vases and boxes. Each of these can be decorated accordingly to match your decor and placed suitably in plain view rather than lying flat and often out of view.

2. One card-Two uses: Another idea for a guest book makes use of your place cards. Guests can write little messages on the backs of their cards and drop them in pretty glass bowls. Later, cut the cards in half and display both your guest’s name next to the card with their message. This will make a beautiful and meaningful scrapbook. Store your wedding invitations, your place cards, and any other stationery item or keepsake to help you remember this day.

3. Take a Wish- Leave a Wish: Very unique and quite resourceful.Instead of a guest book, two apothecary jars labeled “Make a Wish” and “Take a Wish” let guests write down their wishes for the happy couple and pick up a sweet sentiment from the bride and groom.
Find a container that will hold your wedding wishes. In this example, an antique birdcage is used, but there are many other options that will fit your wedding style. Large craft stores carry many things that could work for this. They usually have a large selection of different shaped glass vases and containers. Use some creativity. For a garden themed wedding, a tin watering can would look great. For a more modern approach, a colored glass cube vase would fit the theme. The possibilities are endless.
Step1
Make a small decorative sign to put by your "guest book" that will explain it to guests. Your guests may be used to the more traditional guest book so they might not immediately know what to do. Write it yourself if you are skilled in photography. If not, print it on a high quality thicker piece of card stock in a decorative font. It should be short and simple. Something like "Make a wish for the happy couple!" works great.
Step2
Cut up pieces of decorative paper into small rectangles. 3" x 4" is a good size and can be easily cut from a 12" x 12" sheet of quality scrapbook paper. This paper can be purchased at specialty scrapbook stores as well as discount craft stores. Set them out next to your container with a few nice pens. Use different colored ink to spice it up. If having an outdoor wedding don’t forget some sort of paper weight to place on top of each stack like a rock or glass figurine.
Step3
After the wedding, reading the little personalized notes from your friends and family is a wonderful experience. These little scraps of paper can be used in a variety of ways. You can arrange them into a collage on mat board and have it framed. Another idea is to use them throughout a wedding scrapbook.

4. For Wine Lovers: A Wine Bottle Guest Book! How cool is this for those wine lovers out there, this is a great way to memorialize those guests at your wedding. I could see the bottle sitting in an elegant bookcase 40 years from the day of your wedding. A felt tip “skinny” marker should do the trick. Be sure to practice first with different tip styles.

Tips from brides:

“I came across a wedding guest quilt online the other day and everything fell into place. Our colors are black, white, ivory and gold so we're going to have 5" squares of white fabric and black fabric markers. The 5" squares will have a frame drawn on them in chalk to show people where they can write (4" square).
After the wedding, and the purchase of a quilting hoop, we will sew the squares along with smaller ivory and gold squares together in a quilt pattern and make a quilt with a black border and backing.

“My cousin did a coffee table book of local artists from Savannah (where her wedding was located) for her guest book. People signed whatever page they wanted to and wrote sweet messages. They couple then displayed the book on their home coffee table and if people pick-it up to look they see all the nice messages left by their guests.”

“For memories that never fade, invite your guests to record their presence at an important gathering by signing their names on the voluminous Grand Signature Bowl with its accompanying Sterling Silver Scribe. The scribe has a special diamond tip that writes on glass, and comes with a card demonstrating how to hold the pen.”

“I like the idea of creating a picture book on http://www.blurb.com/ or some other kind of publishing website and just add pictures, but leave some pictures blank for signatures”

“WE are doing the photo book as well. But instead of everyone taking their own pictures with a Polaroid we are going to designate two people to take pictures of the guest as the arrive at the reception. I will then have my guestbook already laid out with a spot for comments and then save room for the picture that I will insert at a later date. I hope this helps!”

Q.
What is the etiquette regarding hand-delivered wedding invitations? I want to bring them to my coworkers and a few friends who live near my office. Is this appropriate?
A.
Delivering some of your wedding invitations by hand is a fine and acceptable option. However, rather than slipping them into your coworkers' mails slots or onto their desks, make sure it is an actual hand-delivery -- from your hands to theirs. This way, you will get to say a few words to each guest while you present the invitation and, most important, the invitation will not be overlooked.

Q.
My fiance and I do not want to have any children at our wedding. Should we indicate this on the invitations?

A.
This is always a touchy subject. Never print "no children" or "adults only" on an invitation. The way an invitation is addressed, whether on the outer or inner envelope, indicates exactly who -- and by omission, who is not -- invited to the wedding. Make sure your wedding party and family members know that there will be no children at the wedding so they can spread the word if necessary. If people ask to bring their children even after receiving their invitation, it's best to be as direct as possible, saying that your wedding plans really do not include children.

Q.
What is the correct wording to tell people where we're registered? How do we let the guest know we'd prefer cash gifts?

A.
It is never proper to include information about gifts in the wording of the invitation. Traditionally it was also considered improper to include any sort of announcement of your gift registries as inserts with your invitations. But times have changed, and many couples choose to include these enclosure cards, which guests find convenient. Often the company at which the couple is registered will provide these cards, making it appear that the store itself, rather than the couple, is informing guests about the registry. If you do not wish to include enclosure cards, the more traditional route is to let your family and wedding party know the details. They are the best resource for the guests. Some couples would prefer that their guests bring no gifts to the wedding. It is not appropriate to print "No Gifts Please" on the invitation, instead you should rely on word of mouth generated by your attendants and wedding party. If you would prefer guests to donate to a certain charity, the wedding party can pass along that information, too. Guests want to show their happiness by bringing a present, so no matter what you do you're bound to receive several. Never print a request for cash gifts on your invitations. Asking your wedding party to spread the word of your desire for cash is also impolite, both to the wedding party and the guests. If the "No Gifts" request is spread, guests wishing to offer some sort of token will often bring or send cash. The giving of cash is common in many cultures, so it may be appropriate for you to have a money box or designated place where cash gifts can be left. The bottom line is, it is never appropriate to mention wedding gifts in the wording of the wedding invitation.

Can I use printed labels on my wedding invitations?

A.
Affixing labels to your wedding invitation envelops makes them appear far less personal than they should be. Even if you are inviting many guests to the wedding, hand-address the invitation or, budget permitting, hire a calligrapher to handle the project. If you are worried about not being able to complete a large number of invitations, plan to order them as early as you can so you'll have enough time to finish them. Printing is always an option since there are many fonts to choose from and is much cheaper than a calligrapher.

What are the correct titles to use for guests when addressing my envelopes?

A.
Most of the titles we use in addressing envelopes will be familiar, but here is a breakdown:

A married couple: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Fallow
A married couple in which the woman has kept her name Ms. Janice Collins and Mr. Kevin Black
A widow Mrs. Carl Fallow
A divorced woman Ms. Sally Fallow (or her maiden name if she's reclaimed it).

Is it acceptable to use a nickname when addressing an invitation to a friend?

A.
In formal communications such as a wedding invitation never use a nickname in the address. If you don't know a person's real name, ask them or a mutual friend for clarification. If either member of the couple getting married is typically known by a nickname, it is not appropriate to refer to the individual by that nickname on the invitation. When a name appears on an invitation it should be the full, legal name.

Q.
How should I write times and dates on my invitations?

A.
For traditional invitations, all numbers in the date and time should always be spelled out, for example, "the thirty-first of July". The exception to this is a long number in a street address, for example, "1853 Glenn Road". The year is also written out in full, for example, "two thousand and one". Half-hours are written as "half after two o'clock" -- never as "two-thirty." Less formal invitations use numerals in the date only, for example, "January 5th 2002". The time is still written out in full.

Q.
What is the proper etiquette about mentioning a parent on the invitation if that parent isn't hosting the wedding?

A.
When one parent is not hosting (which may occur for any number of reasons), it is up to the couple and the host parent to decide if the non-host should be included. Generally, the host alone is mentioned on the invitation, but including both parents' names is perfectly acceptable. The etiquette on this issue is not influenced by the gender of the parent who is not hosting.

Q.
When should I address and send my invitations?

A.
Begin to address your wedding invitations two to three months before the event. Err on the side of three months if you're addressing them yourself and you have a large guest list. At six to eight weeks before the event you can send out the invitations. This will give you plenty of time to receive the responses and make final head counts. Some people you expected to attend will probably decline, and with this lead time you can send out invitations to people you thought you couldn't invite. If you are mailing some invitations overseas, allow ten weeks. Send your wedding announcements out on the day of your wedding or the day after. There are so many rules of etiquette about wording for my invitations. A lot of these rules don't feel comfortable or natural to me. Do I have to follow them all?

A.
That's a very interesting question, and you're right, the etiquette rules can seem overwhelming. Think of these rules more as etiquette guidelines or recommendations. If certain wording doesn't feel natural or appropriate to you, find a way to convey the information in a manner that feels right. Many of the so-called etiquette rules are designed to keep events on schedule and ultimately to make life easier for the couple (the mailing time for invitations, for example). You shouldn't follow guidelines that don't work for you, but by the same token, think twice before you reject all etiquette suggestions. Often they'll help to make the event turn out just right.
